Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) Selects Exceleron’s MyUsage®
Dallas, Texas – June 12, 2014 — Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has partnered with Exceleron Software to offer prepay utility services to its customers. MLGW is the nation’s largest three-service municipal utility, serving nearly 421,000 customers.
Last spring and summer, MLGW began exploring the benefits of prepay in its “Smart Talk” news releases. According to those articles, MLGW anticipates that prepay customers could save $7.9 million on their electric bills each year, assuming a 12% annual savings on their electric bill, which has been documented by other utilities offering prepay programs. In addition, if half of Memphis’s low-income residents take advantage of prepay, MLGW customers could realize potential savings of $2.025 million due to the elimination of the $150 security deposit currently required after a disconnection. MLGW also noted that the remote reconnections will allow prepay customers to resume service within minutes, rather than hours.
Municipalities, investor owned utilities (IOUs), and rural electric cooperatives across the country are switching to a prepayment model in which customers pay for electricity before they use it. Exceleron’s MyUsage suite of applications gives customers the tools to manage their energy usage without feeling confused or overwhelmed. Customers can access their prepay account balance and usage history via the MyUsage smartphone application, myusage.com web portal, telephone, email, and text messaging. Prepay customers can choose the amount and frequency of payments and can easily add funds to their accounts through a variety of convenient payment options.

Exceleron has completed integration of MyUsage to MLGW’s existing CIS and AMI systems and trained MLGW representatives in the use of MyUsage Prepay. Upon successful completion of the pilot, MLGW anticipates a full rollout, making the benefits of prepay accounts available to all residential customers.
